Can you play Windows games on an iPad (2026)?

Updated 3 October 2026 · facts about Madeira checked on 3 October, about other products on 2 October 2026

Short version: no, not locally. An ordinary person cannot run Windows games on the iPad itself: it takes JIT compilation, Apple gives that to third-party developers only for browser engines, and only in the EU and Japan, and the App Store rules forbid an app to download and execute code that adds or changes its features. What works is cloud streaming (GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming) and streaming from your own computer (Moonlight with Sunshine, Steam Link): the game does not run on the iPad, which shows the picture and sends your controls back. The Cyberpunk 2077 that enthusiasts showed on an iPhone and iPads in late September 2026 is, as far as the authors' descriptions show, an unofficial launch of the game's native Mac version, not of a Windows game (details below). Uncork runs games on a Mac, and we are not making an iPad version.

Why not locally

To run foreign machine code at acceptable speed, an emulator needs JIT compilation. Without it, an interpreter is what is left: that is how UTM SE, the App Store version of UTM, works. By the project's documentation it runs without JIT on a slower interpreter (UTM documentation), and its App Store listing calls it a retro PC emulator (App Store).

What Apple offers. Apple gives JIT compilation to third-party developers only for alternative browser engines, and only in the EU and Japan. In the EU that is on devices running iOS 17.4 or iPadOS 18 and later (Apple's page); in Japan, iOS 26.2 and later (Apple's page for Japan, where the availability condition names iOS and does not mention iPadOS). For apps that are not browsers, JIT is not offered on iOS: that was Apple's reply to the iSH developers (received in late September 2024, published on 16 October 2024) (iSH blog), and an FSFE report of 20 April 2026 describes a refusal of the same kind to a free software terminal-like app (FSFE).

What the rules say. Section 2.5.2 of the App Store rules forbids an app to download, install, or execute code that adds or changes its features; the exception is educational apps that teach people to write and test executable code: in limited circumstances they may download such code if it is viewable and editable by the user. Retro console and PC emulators may offer to download games (4.7), but an app may not, without Apple's permission, expose native platform APIs to such software (4.7.2) (the rules).

JIT on iOS 26. Browser engines in the EU and Japan aside, an app gets JIT only from a debugger attached to it, so JIT does not work in App Store and TestFlight builds but does in sideloaded ones: by the description of the iCube project from 19 September 2026, when a game starts the debugger spends a few seconds preparing a region for code and then disconnects (the project's discussion). Enthusiasts use the StikDebug debugger for this, which is no longer on the App Store; by its own description, on iOS 26 JIT works only in apps whose developers have updated them for it (StikDebug).

Why not any app. By StikDebug's documentation, on devices without the TXM and SPTM protection monitors it is enough to attach and detach the debugger. On devices with them the app itself prepares every code region through the debugger and has to allocate them all in advance: a region that appears after the debugger has detached can no longer be prepared (StikDebug documentation). By Apple's guide, these monitors are in A15, M2 and later chips (Apple), which includes iPads with M2, M4 and M5. By SideStore's documentation of 17 June 2026, on iOS 26.6 and 27 JIT works only for a few apps (SideStore).

What enthusiasts do. The open Madeira project shows that such a launch is technically possible: it runs Windows games on an iPhone and translates their x86-64 code into ARM code on the device itself (project page). It gets JIT through an attached debugger, it is installed by sideloading with an Apple ID, and by its authors' account it cannot be put on the App Store. The project calls itself a research project and says many games start and some play well, but speed and compatibility differ from game to game. Its first version came out on 1 October 2026, 0.1.1 on 2 October and 0.1.2 on 3 October; per the 0.1.2 release notes, 64-bit Direct3D 11 games and 32-bit Direct3D 9 and 11 games did not start on iOS 26 in the first two versions, and that is now fixed. It needs iOS 26 or later. The project's description names an iPhone; by its code the iPad is also among the devices the app is built for (comments mention observations on an M4 iPad), but the project publishes no game results for the iPad. In April 2025 an enthusiast ran Windows 11 for ARM on an iPad Air with an M2 chip in UTM, with JIT enabled by sideloading in the EU (MacRumors); that is not games.

These are experiments for enthusiasts, not a way to play. An app signed with a free developer account stops launching after 7 days and has to be installed again (Apple).

What about Cyberpunk on iPad?

In late September 2026 enthusiasts showed Cyberpunk 2077 running on the device itself, with no streaming. The press retold a post by the Reddit user u/Thisisyouracc0un-t with the game on an iPhone 17 Pro Max: by the author's description, as retold by Game Rant on 23 September, about 900p on a mix of medium and high settings; judging by the video, Game Rant puts it at just over 30 frames per second (Game Rant). It is the Mac version of the game, run through a home-made layer. How it works has not been published; Game Rant's guess is that it bridges the differences between macOS and iOS: files, input, system libraries. The author calls it a layer for Mac games on iPhones and iPads. As of 23 September the layer is not published; people would need their own game files, and the app would have to be sideloaded.

Later, posts appeared in r/macgaming and r/ipad about running it on an iPad Pro with M4 and on an iPad with M5 (the second with a home-made on-screen gamepad). The author of the M4 post calls the launch native, so it is most likely the same route through the Mac version. The press has not covered these posts and we have not checked them independently, so the figures are only from the post's screenshots: upscaled with MetalFX from 800×600 to 1600×1200, about 54 frames per second, and at 2752×2064 about 6; by the author's description, "1K" on medium settings gives 50–60. The author gives the model as "M4 10+10c": by Apple's specifications, the 10-core CPU comes only in the 1 TB and 2 TB iPad Pro M4, and those have 16 GB of memory (Apple), the same as the Mac version of the game requires.

Officially the game exists only for the Mac: on the App Store "Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate" is sold marked "Only for Mac" and needs macOS 15.5, an M1 chip and 16 GB of memory (checked on 2 October 2026) (App Store). Asked about an iPhone and iPad version in July 2025, CD Projekt Red senior publishing producer Oleg Shatulo called it a fascinating technical challenge but said there are no plans for it right now (The Escapist). The "iPhone, iPad, Mac" line next to the game in Game Center, which users showed in screenshots in 2025, has not turned into an iPad version.

Why this is not about Windows games. The Mac version's code is already built for Apple's processors and draws through Metal, so only what differs between macOS and iPadOS has to be bridged, and by the layer author's description no JIT is needed. A Windows game's code is written for x86 processors: it has to be translated for Apple's processor on the device itself, and iPadOS lets translated code run fast only through JIT, that is, in a sideloaded build with a debugger. The layer for Mac games is not Madeira: Madeira runs Windows versions of games and needs JIT. So Cyberpunk on an iPad does not mean Windows games will run on an iPad, and it is not a way to play: there is no iPad version on the App Store, and the enthusiasts' launch needs your own copy of the Mac version and sideloading.

What works

In every method below the game does not run on the iPad: it shows the picture and sends your controls back.

Which method to pick

What you needWhat fitsLimits
To play without a powerful computer of your owncloud: GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gamingneeds internet and a gamepad (some Xbox games have touch controls); the game must be in the service's catalogue
To play games from a computer you already haveMoonlight with Sunshine, or Steam Linkthe iPad and the computer on one local network
To run a Windows game on the iPad itselfthere is no way for an ordinary personJIT is unavailable to ordinary apps, and sideloaded projects remain experiments

Where Uncork fits

Uncork runs Windows games on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later, macOS 14 or later). We have no iPad version and are not making one. From an iPad you can connect a streaming client to a Mac, but we have not measured that with Uncork's games. How to play Windows games on the Mac itself is on the page “How to play Windows games on an Apple Silicon Mac: every method”.

Questions

Can you run a Windows game on an iPad from the App Store?

No. Rule 2.5.2 forbids an app to download and execute code that changes its features, and the JIT compilation that emulation needs is not offered to third-party apps, except browser engines in the EU and Japan. The App Store has the UTM SE emulator, but it runs without JIT on a slow interpreter and its listing calls it a retro PC emulator.

Why does Cyberpunk 2077 run on an iPad when Windows games do not?

Enthusiasts run the game's native Mac version: its code is already built for Apple's processors, and by the layer author's description it needs no JIT. This is unofficial: on the App Store the game is sold only for the Mac, and such a launch needs your own copy of the Mac version and sideloading. A Windows game needs its x86 code translated on the device itself, that is, JIT, and on an iPad that exists only in sideloaded builds with a debugger.

Can you make your own JIT for the iPad?

You can write a JIT compiler, but iPadOS does not let an ordinary app run the code it generates: browser engines in the EU and Japan aside, that works only in a sideloaded build a debugger has been attached to, which is how Madeira and UTM get JIT. An app from the App Store or TestFlight will not get JIT this way, and on A15, M2 and later chips its developer also has to build the debugger protocol into the app and allocate all the memory for code in advance.

Is there an Uncork for the iPad?

No, and we are not making one: Uncork runs Windows games on Apple Silicon Macs. From an iPad you can connect a streaming client to a Mac, but we have not measured that with Uncork's games.

Can you play Steam games on an iPad?

By streaming. Steam Link shows games from a computer that is running Steam, provided both devices are on the same local network. GeForce NOW runs games from its own catalogue: you need to own the game in a supported store, and for some Steam games the publisher has to agree.

Do cloud games need a gamepad?

Generally, yes. In GeForce NOW on an iPad, by the service's rules, games with gamepad support are available, and a mouse and keyboard work only in menus. Xbox Cloud Gaming needs a gamepad over Bluetooth or USB, and some games have touch controls.
